Proverbs 11:13 “A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.”

A retired British spy once revealed the construction of a pipe of his own design that, although it smoked constantly, had a secret space between its inside and outside walls in which he carried his tissue paper notes. If the man should be accosted, he would have simply given an innocent twist to the overlapping rim which would have made the hidden chamber a part of the bowl and caused the incriminating papers to be destroyed by the burning tobacco.

People like to talk, and people like to feel like they have the inside scoop on something. However, this can lead to a problem. The problemĀ is being a talebearer.

What good is it to have secret information, and to have the inside scoop if you can’t tell anyone that you have the private info? Well, there is plenty of good for a godly and biblical man.

When it comes to being a friend, counselor, or even a pastor, you have to be able to keep personal confidence if you are going to maintain the trust of those who need you. This is a vital aspect of trust.

As a Christian man, who claims to know God, and have a good grasp of the His word, other men around you will come to you when they need good reliable advice. When that happens it often involves them sharing with you some difficult and private information that they need help with.

This is a great opportunity to share Christ with them, and how they can be forgiven of their sin, and trust Christ as their Savior. It is an open door to expose the truth and wisdom of scripture, and speak it into their heart and life.

The danger is that you now you have secret information about that person, and if it somehow gets out, you may be accused of being the one who revealed it. As it was taught to soldiers in WWII, “loose lips sink ships”.
